Grammar rule

Agreement of the descriptive adjective

A French adjective copies the gender and number of its noun.

  • 3 parts

Explanation of the rule

The rule

A descriptive adjective agrees in gender and number with the noun it describes. The feminine usually adds -e, the plural adds -s.

  • un livre vert, une porte verte
  • des livres verts, des portes vertes

Special cases

An adjective already ending in -e does not change in the feminine: un exercice facile, une leçon facile. An adjective ending in -s or -x stays the same in the masculine plural: un gros livre, de gros livres.

Common mistake

With nouns of different genders, the adjective takes the masculine plural: une fille et un garçon contents.
